Algeria reaffirms support for interim govt, invites CA

Algeria has reiterated its full support for Bangladesh’s Interim Government and extended an invitation to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus to visit the North African nation. 

The message was conveyed by Abdelouahab Saidani, the Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh, during a meeting with Prof Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka on Tuesday.  

During the discussions, the Chief Adviser invited his Algerian counterpart to visit Bangladesh and urged Algeria to send business delegations to Dhaka to strengthen trade and investment ties between the two countries. Ambassador Saidani assured that Algeria would continue to provide political and economic support to Bangladesh, adding that their Energy Minister is scheduled to visit Dhaka in March.  

The ambassador also highlighted Algeria’s plans to increase imports of Bangladeshi products, including textiles, jute, pharmaceuticals, food, and electronics.  

Prof Yunus sought Algeria’s support for Bangladesh’s candidacy in key international organizations. Bangladesh is vying for positions in the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the term 2026-2027, the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for 2028-2030, and the Non-Permanent Seat of the UN Security Council for 2031-2032. Elections for these positions are scheduled for December 2025, 2027, and 2030, respectively.  

The meeting was also attended by Lamiya Morshed, Senior Secretary and Chief Coordinator of SDG Affairs, and BM Jamal Hossain, Director General of the Foreign Ministry. The discussions underscored the growing bilateral ties and mutual commitment to enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, and international diplomacy.
