New political party set to launch on Feb 28: Sarjis

The announcement was made during a press conference held at JANAC office in Bangla Motor on Monday evening (February 24).  

Sarjis Alam, Key Organiser of the Nagorik Committee, stated, "On February 28, we will launch a new political party in collaboration with the Students Against Discrimination and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee. The oath-taking ceremony will take place near the Jatiya Sangsad building, symbolizing the nation's hopes and aspirations. For 54 years, the Jatiya Sangsad has been a hub of tyranny and partisan policymaking, and we aim to change that narrative."  

Akhtar Hossain, Member Secretary of the Nagorik Committee, shared insights from a nationwide public opinion survey titled "A New Bangladesh in Your Eyes." He revealed that over 200,000 people from diverse backgrounds participated in the 15-day campaign, expressing a collective desire for a corruption-free nation, good governance, accountability, social justice, and equal opportunities for all.  

"The survey highlighted the need to improve the quality of services provided by state institutions. Our new party will strive to meet these public expectations, emphasizing honesty, ethics, and internal democracy in leadership elections," Akhtar added.  

Regarding the party's name and symbol, Akhtar mentioned that suggestions such as Jantar Dal, Nagorik Shakti, Republic Party, and Bangladesh Nagorik Party were among the most popular. Symbols reflecting struggle, development, and national identity, like the rising sun, book, and pen, were also proposed.  

Hannan Masud, Key Organiser of SAD, emphasized the need for a new political structure, stating, "Since independence, the people of Bangladesh have not achieved the political system they deserve. In 2024, students will announce a new party that embodies the aspirations of the nation."  

Arif Sohel, Member Secretary of SAD, highlighted the historical significance of the 2024 mass uprising, drawing parallels to the movements of 1947, 1971, and 1990. "The people of Bangladesh desire a new party and a welfare state. The Jatiya Nagorik Committee was formed to unite those who stood with us during the uprising. Now, it is time to transform this historical force into a political party that carries the responsibility of shaping Bangladesh's future," he said.  

The launch of the new party marks a significant step in the country's political landscape, aiming to address long-standing issues and fulfill the aspirations of the people.
