Abrar Murder Case: Death row convict escapes from jail

One of the death row convicts in Abrar Fahad murder case, Muntasir Al Jemi, has escaped from prison on August 6 last year.

However, the authorities kept the information from Abrar's family until Monday (February 24).

The revelation came into light as Abrar's younger brother, Abrar Faiyaz, addressed the matter in a Facebook post this evening, expressing outrage over the delayed disclosure.

Faiyaz wrote in the post that the escape in a Facebook post on Tuesday evening. He stated that Muntasir Al Jemi fled from jail after August 5, but the family was not informed about the incident until now. Fayaz wrote, "A death row convict is supposed to be in a condemned cell. How did he escape? The fact that this information was not disclosed for so long proves that no effort was made to recapture him. Three other convicts are already at large."

Earlier, on October 7, 2019, Abrar Fahad, a brilliant student of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was brutally murdered at Sher-e-Bangla Hall. The incident sparked nationwide outrage, with several leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) implicated in the killing.

On December 8, 2021, Judge Abu Zafar Kamruzzaman of Dhaka’s 1st Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced 20 individuals to death and five others to life imprisonment in connection with the murder. 

However, the recent escape of Muntasir Al Jemi has reignited discussions about the case.
