Being with people more urgent now: Nahid

Former Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam announced his resignation on Tuesday, stating that he intends to take a more active role on the streets to fulfill the aspirations of the July uprising rather than remain within the government.  

At a press conference at the State Guest House Jamuna, held just hours after submitting his resignation, Nahid justified his decision, emphasizing the importance of being directly engaged with the people.  

"I have stepped down. Over the past six months, I did my best to contribute within the government. Besides overseeing two ministries, I was assigned several additional responsibilities. Some of our initiatives may bring positive results for the people," Nahid said.  

He acknowledged the brevity of his tenure but maintained that his efforts would ultimately be judged by the public. "Six months is a short period, yet I tried to make a difference. From today, I no longer hold any government position," he stated.  

Explaining his decision to leave, Nahid pointed out that the goals of the popular uprising remain unfulfilled. "The government was formed on promises of justice and reform. Two student advisers are still in their roles, believing they can contribute from within. But I felt the need to step outside to be with the people. They will continue their work in government, and if necessary, resign when they see fit."  

Outlining his political ambitions, Nahid confirmed his commitment to a new political movement. "I plan to be part of the emerging political force. My goal is to reconnect with people, unite them, and work towards realizing our vision for change. That is why I resigned," he declared.  

When asked about challenges faced during his tenure, Nahid admitted to encountering bureaucratic roadblocks. "We inherited a problematic administrative structure. The police lacked confidence, and we faced difficulties in prosecuting those responsible for the July massacre," he noted.  

Despite these hurdles, he emphasized the steps taken to address corruption and inefficiency. "I was part of a public administration committee for two weeks, where we decided to take action against corrupt deputy commissioners from 2018. We worked to overcome bureaucratic resistance," he said.
