The last election of Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited, one of the prominent sporting clubs of Bangladesh, was held on 6 March 2021. After years, the decision was made to hold the next election in May.
The tenure of the Mohammedan's Board of Directors is two years. The election was supposed to take place by the 5th of March in 2023, but two more years passed without happening so.
According to the club's constitution, the country's traditional club is now in danger of falling into legal trouble. In this situation, the current board of directors of Mohammedan has taken initiative to complete the election within the next three months.
A meeting of the club's board of directors was held on Saturday. The meeting decided to hold elections in May. Although the date has not been fixed, initially the 3rd or 10th of May were in their mind for the next Annual General Meeting (AGM) and election.
Also, the meeting also decided to form a special committee for providing necessary assistance in important activities and election related matters of the club.
The committee, comprising a director as chairman and a permanent member as member secretary, will do all the functions of the next general meeting and election of the club.
Meanwhile, the former director-in-charge Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan is likely to return to the club's Board of Directors.
The verdict came of the case on money laundering filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) against him in 2019. After six years, Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan was acquitted in the verdict. On 26 January, Dhaka Special Judge's Court-6 had delivered the verdict in the money laundering case and acquitted the former director in-charge of Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited and former director of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
The judge court gave the verdict in the case, saying, "The charges brought against Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan, the only accused in this case (Case No-152/2019, ACC.GR No-133/2019) under section 27 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2004 and sections 4 (2) and 4 (3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act 2012 could not be proved beyond doubt and for that the court acquitted him. The defendant's guarantors are exempted from the liability of the bail bond as well. If there is any account or locker in the name of the accused or if there is any prohibition on going abroad, if there is any restriction on the sale and purchase of immovable property, it should be released in favor of the accused."
In this regard, Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan's lawyer Barrister M Ismail Hossain said, "The state could not present the evidence of the allegations of money laundering against him. We have been able to prove that Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan did not commit any money laundering. The money for renting the hall room of the club has been deposited in the club's account and its audit has also been submitted to the court. Therefore, the court dismissed the charges brought against Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan and acquitted him."
After that it is very likely that the former director-in-charge of Mohammedan Sporting Club is returning in the club as path is open for the prominent sports organiser now.
