Sen's comments on Bangladesh shocking, unacceptable : Jamaat Ameer

In a Facebook post on Monday, Rahman accused Sen of openly advocating for a fallen autocrat and dismissed his comments as "shocking, unacceptable, and condemnable."

In an interview with an Indian news agency Press Trust of India (PTI), Amartya Sen expressed "deep concern" over the ongoing situation in Bangladesh. He also remarked that his friend, Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, has "a long way to go" to resolve the current political impasse.

In response, the Jamaat Ameer said, "Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen has recently made unwarranted comments about Bangladesh's internal affairs. I don't know where his conscience is. There is no need to lecture Bangladesh on tolerance. He should try to see himself in the mirror of the society and country he lives in."

Amartya Sen's interview also touched on issues such as allegations of minority persecution, the decision not to ban the ousted Awami League, and the role of Jamaat-e-Islami. Sen said, "Historically, Bangladesh has been generous towards minorities and has kept communal forces like Jamaat under control. Unfortunately, incidents of mosque attacks have also occurred in India. Such incidents, whether in Bangladesh or India, must be stopped."

Reacting to this, Shafiqur Rahman said, "What he said about Jamaat-e-Islami reflects his preconceived notions. The reality is entirely the opposite." He added, "The real perpetrators of violence against the minorities he mentioned are the Awami League. If you have the courage, say it openly. But you can't, because you are limited by your so-called civility."
