UN to present fact-finding report on Bangladesh protests Wednesday

The session, scheduled for 6 PM Dhaka time, will be broadcast live on YouTube at (https://youtube.com/live/szaCueW3WLs), according to the UN official website.  

The event will include representatives from the Bangladesh interim government, civil society, and UN member states, who will analyze the report’s findings and recommendations aimed at promoting justice, accountability, and human rights reforms.  

Ahead of the presentation, Turk expressed hope that the report would contribute to truth-telling, reparations, and legal reforms in Bangladesh.  

"It is essential to ensure due process in criminal cases and investigate acts of retaliatory violence, particularly against minorities," he stated during the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.  

Türk highlighted the violent crackdown on student protests in 2024, describing it as a severe suppression of a movement advocating for human rights.  

"Bangladesh witnessed a wave of violence last year, as the previous government forcibly suppressed a student-led movement," he said.  

Despite this, he noted that Bangladesh is now at a turning point, and the UN’s independent fact-finding report serves as a crucial tool in shaping a more just and democratic future.  

The report’s release and subsequent discussions in Geneva are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping future human rights policies in Bangladesh.
