CA urged to align labour laws with global standards

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has called for urgent reforms in Bangladesh's labour laws to align with international standards and enhance the living conditions of millions of workers across various industries.

During a meeting with officials from the Labour and Employment Ministry, ahead of the 353rd session of the International Labour Organization (ILO) scheduled for March 10-20 in Geneva, the Chief Adviser emphasized the need for swift action. Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder confirmed the directives.

Labour and Employment Adviser M Sakhawat Hossain will lead the Bangladesh delegation at the ILO session.

"We must take proactive steps and ensure results. Making excuses is not an option," stated the Chief Adviser, stressing the urgency of necessary changes.

He also directed officials to implement insurance coverage and healthcare benefits for workers, ensuring better protection and welfare in the labour sector.

Special Envoy to the Chief Adviser, Lutfey Siddiqi, who participated in the meeting virtually, acknowledged Bangladesh’s progress in labour reforms. However, he noted that while significant improvements have been made, further efforts are needed to meet global benchmarks.

Present at the meeting were Labour and Employment Adviser M Sakhawat Hossain, Labour Secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman, Law and Justice Division Secretary Sheikh Abu Taher, and ILO Country Representative Tuomo Poutiainen. Additionally, Bangladesh’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative in Geneva, Tareq Md Ariful Islam, joined the discussion online.
