3 Hizb ut-Tahrir members placed on remand

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Mohammad Zonayed issued the remand order on Friday (March 7) after a hearing.

The remanded individuals are Monirul Islam, 40, Mohtasin Billah, 40, and Mahmudul Hasan, 21. Of them, Monirul Islam has been granted a two-day remand, while Mohtasin Billah and Mahmudul Hasan have been remanded for one day each.

The investigating officer of the case, from Uttara West Police Station, produced the accused in court and sought a 10-day remand under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Lawyers for the accused opposed the remand and applied for bail, which was contested by the state. After hearing both sides, the court granted the remand.

According to the case details, the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir planned to disrupt the country's integrity, solidarity, and public safety by spreading panic and promoting extremist ideologies. They allegedly announced a "March for Khilafah" program after Jummah prayers on Friday, near the North Gate of Baitul Mukarram. The accused reportedly held a meeting at the residence of Mohtasin Billah in Uttara to plan the activities.

A case was filed by Sub-Inspector Almgir Kabir of the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit in connection with the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
