Water supplier freed after Asif Mahmud’s intervention

A man, detained during a police crackdown on members of the banned Hizb ut-Tahrir in Dhaka’s Paltan area, was released following the intervention of Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan.  

The detainee, identified as Arman, was taken from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch office on Minto Road around 4:40 PM by Asif, who serves as an adviser to the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives.  

In a Facebook post, Asif explained that Arman, a former rickshaw puller now working as a water supplier, had been mistakenly detained. "When he tried to assist the police, he was attacked and injured. Later, army personnel detained him and handed him over to the DB," Asif wrote. He further stated that he secured Arman’s release and took him to a hospital for treatment.  

Earlier in the day, police used batons, teargas, and sound grenades to disperse members of Hizb ut-Tahrir as they marched under the "March for Khilafat" banner. Multiple arrests were made, though the exact number remains unconfirmed.
