HC rules over provision for speaker to swear in president

The High Court (HC) has issued a rule questioning the legality of the constitutional provision that allows the Speaker of Parliament to administer the oath of office to the President.  

A High Court division bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain issued the order after hearing a writ petition challenging the provision. 

The court has asked the authorities to explain why this amendment, introduced through the 15th constitutional amendment, should not be declared unconstitutional in light of the original 1972 Constitution.  

The rule requires the law secretary, cabinet secretary, and Supreme Court registrar general to respond within eight weeks.
