DMP claims officials attacked during anti-rape protest

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has alleged that its officers were attacked by protesters during an anti-rape demonstration on Tuesday.  

In a press release issued Tuesday night, DMP Deputy Police Commissioner (Media) Md Talebur Rahman stated that a group of 60-70 demonstrators, including both men and women, attempted to march toward the Chief Adviser’s official residence, Jamuna, under the banner of an anti-rape protest.  

According to the statement, police intercepted the march at the Hotel Intercontinental intersection around 3:30 PM. The demonstrators allegedly used women as shields in an attempt to break through the police barricade. When officers urged them to disperse for security and traffic management, the situation reportedly turned aggressive, with protesters allegedly attacking police personnel.  

The DMP claims that several officers sustained injuries due to "scratches" and scuffles. At one point, the protesters allegedly launched a sudden attack, throwing bricks and using sticks against law enforcement.  

Assistant Commissioner of Ramna Zone Abdullah Al Mamun was reported to have been seriously injured in the incident. Other injured personnel included Deputy Police Commissioner of Ramna Division Md Masud Alam, two female officers, and three constables.  

The police later dispersed the protesters and brought the situation under control. The statement confirmed that legal action is being taken against those involved in the alleged attack.
