Govt finalizes amendments to Women & Children Repression Prevention Act: Adviser

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with leaders of an anti-rape platform at the Secretariat, Dr. Asif Nazrul stated, "We held consultation meetings with all stakeholders on Monday and Tuesday. A draft of the amended law has been prepared, and today we are circulating it among relevant stakeholders. Our goal is not just to speed up trials but to ensure fair and just outcomes."  

According to the proposed amendments, the investigation period for rape cases will be reduced from 30 days to 15 days, while the trial period will be shortened from 180 days to 90 days. Additionally, if deemed necessary by the judge, case proceedings and investigations may proceed based on a medical certificate without waiting for a DNA report.  

Dr. Nazrul reiterated the government's zero-tolerance policy toward violence against women and assured that steps were being taken to ensure swift justice. Addressing concerns raised in the meeting, he confirmed that DNA samples of the accused in the recent Magura child rape case had already been collected, and authorities were committed to expediting justice in the case.  

Regarding the demand for special courts to handle rape cases, the adviser acknowledged that rape cases are currently tried under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, which also deals with other crimes, causing delays. He assured that he would raise the proposal for dedicated courts in discussions with the Advisory Council.  

In response to calls for separate cells to prevent sexual harassment in workplaces and educational institutions, Dr. Nazrul pointed to an existing High Court verdict on the matter. "Based on that verdict, we aim to introduce a more comprehensive law, ensuring protection not only in workplaces and educational institutions but also in public spaces," he said, emphasizing efforts to strengthen legal safeguards against harassment.
