CA, UN chief share iftar with Rohingya refugees

Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres shared an iftar meal with Rohingya refugees at the Ukhiya Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar.

The special iftar gathering took place on the evening of Friday (March 14).

The event was attended by thousands of Rohingya men, women, and children, with 70 representatives from each block of different camps. Local administrative officials were also present. Both the Chief Adviser and the UN Secretary-General joined the Rohingya refugees in breaking their fast.

The iftar menu included traditional items such as chickpeas, puffed rice, bananas, potato fritters, onion pakoras, fruits, and juice. The UN Secretary-General and the Chief Adviser ate the same food as the Rohingya refugees, symbolizing solidarity with them.

Before iftar, António Guterres addressed the Rohingya community, stating, “During this visit, I have received two important messages. First, the Rohingya people want to return to Myanmar. Therefore, the international community must make every effort to restore peace in Myanmar and ensure the protection of their rights. It is crucial to eliminate the oppression and discrimination they have suffered in the past and guarantee their dignity.”

He further added, “Secondly, the Rohingya people seek better living conditions in the camps. Unfortunately, several countries, including the United States and some European nations, have recently reduced humanitarian aid for the Rohingya, putting their food security at extreme risk. I assure you that we will do our utmost to address this crisis.”

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus also spoke with the Rohingya refugees, emphasizing Bangladesh’s continued humanitarian approach toward them. He remarked that the iftar gathering was a symbol of solidarity.

He stated, “Despite his demanding schedule, the UN Secretary-General wished to break fast with you all, which is truly an honor for us. His presence here reflects his sincerity and empathy towards you. The request you made to him regarding repatriation has been conveyed with the utmost importance. We are tirelessly working to ensure that you can return to your homeland as soon as possible. If not this Eid, then hopefully by the next Eid, you will be able to celebrate with your loved ones in your own country.”
