Switzerland's Holcim eyes long-term commitment, sustainable expansion with Bangladesh

Holcim Group has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to Bangladesh, with a focus on sustainable practices and expanding operations, during a meeting between the company’s regional leadership and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday.

The high-level meeting was held at the State Guest House Jamuna in the capital on Wednesday.

Martin Kriegner, Executive Committee Member and Head of Asia, Middle East and Africa at Holcim Group, discussed future investment plans, the evolving cement market, and environmental innovations in the sector.

"We deeply appreciate the government’s support, which allows us to produce world-class building materials in Bangladesh," said Kriegner.

Holcim, through its subsidiary LafargeHolcim Bangladesh, operates the country’s only integrated cement plant in Chhatak, Sunamganj, and has maintained a strong presence in the market for over two decades.

Kriegner highlighted Holcim’s use of non-recyclable plastic waste as alternative fuel at its Chhatak facility, claiming the process is environmentally neutral. He also pointed to the company’s carbon capture initiatives at other global sites as potential models for Bangladesh.

Chief Adviser Prof Yunus raised questions about the ecological impact of using plastic-based fuels, to which Kriegner assured that no harmful carbon emissions are being released from the process.

Iqbal Chowdhury, CEO and Managing Director of Holcim Bangladesh, noted that despite recent challenges, industry conditions are improving. He also introduced Holcim’s entry into the aggregates segment, which he believes could significantly reduce foreign exchange spending by replacing imports.

Prof Yunus welcomed Holcim’s plans to deepen its footprint in Bangladesh, reiterating the government's commitment to fostering foreign direct investment and supporting pro-business reforms.

"We are open for investment, and we welcome companies that align with our sustainability goals," the Chief Adviser stated.

Kriegner concluded by reaffirming Holcim’s intention to remain a long-term, responsible player in Bangladesh’s infrastructure growth.

Also present at the meeting were BIDA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, SDG Coordinator Lamiya Morshed, and Principal Secretary Sirajuddin Sathi.
