Bangladesh-India series in jeopardy amid diplomatic tensions

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly hesitant to proceed with a scheduled tour of Bangladesh this August due to rising geopolitical tensions in South Asia, according to The Times of India.

The tour, which was set to include three ODIs and three T20Is in Dhaka and Chattogram, now appears to be in jeopardy amid strained India-Bangladesh relations and broader regional concerns stemming from the India-Pakistan standoff.

A senior BCCI source reportedly told The Times of India, “While the tour was part of the ICC's Future Tours Programme, nothing has been finalized. Given the current scenario, it is unlikely that the Indian team will travel to Bangladesh.”

One major source of tension is allegedly a recent Facebook post by retired Bangladeshi Major General A.L.M. Fazlur Rahman. In the post, he suggested that if India were to attack Pakistan, Bangladesh should occupy seven states of North East India. In this regard, I think it is necessary to start a discussion on a joint military system with China.

However, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director Nazmul Abedeen Fahim dismissed the speculation, stating, “As far as we know, everything is on schedule. Our relationship with the BCCI remains strong. We expect India to arrive as planned.”

The remarks of Major General Rahman, currently serves as the chairman of the National Independent Investigation Commission on the 2009 BDR Mutiny and a former Director General of the Border Guard Bangladesh, reportedly have caused unease in diplomatic circles, further complicating the situation surrounding the cricket tour.

Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since distanced itself from Rahman’s comments. In a formal statement, it clarified, “The views expressed by retired Major General A.L.M. Fazlur Rahman are entirely personal and do not reflect the policies or position of the Government of Bangladesh.” The ministry emphasized that Bangladesh remains committed to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and regional stability.

Still, analysts suspect that the BCCI's waning interest in the tour may be linked to Rahman’s controversial remarks and India’s broader shift toward a more assertive diplomatic posture with its neighbors.

Adding to the uncertainty, The Times of India report also suggested potential delays or complications for the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup, which is slated to be hosted by India in September. The tournament may be impacted by India's rigid diplomatic stance, especially regarding Pakistan and Bangladesh, making any near-term bilateral or multilateral cricket arrangements difficult.
