Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus has ordered the formation of a high-level committee to ensure fair pricing of sacrificial animal hides during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

The directive was issued on Sunday (May 4) during a meeting at the state guesthouse Jamuna.

A statement from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing confirmed the directive, which aims to bring transparency and order to the seasonal market for raw hides, along with ensuring humane livestock transportation, proper waste management, and environmentally responsible tannery operations.

“Year after year, we’ve witnessed people being deprived of fair prices for animal hides. The most affected are the underprivileged members of our society who often rely on the proceeds from selling these hides,” said Professor Yunus. “This disorder must end.”

He further pointed out the existence of a pricing syndicate and affirmed that all necessary steps would be taken to prevent such manipulation. “We will make every effort to ensure that neither syndicates nor administrative failures cause people to lose out on the fair value of their sacrificial animal hides.”

The Chief Adviser also called for humane treatment of animals during transport and sale, and emphasized the proper use of Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) in the leather processing industry.

To implement these directives, Professor Yunus has appointed Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin as the head of the newly formed high-level committee.

Other members include Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter, Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, Road Transport and Bridges Adviser Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Water Resources Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Information Adviser Mahfuz Alam, Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant on Home Affairs Md. Khoda Bakhsh Chowdhury.

The committee will also include Executive Chairmen of BIDA and BEZA, Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmud bin Harun, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Industries Secretary Md. Obaidur Rahman, a representative from religious institutions, and a representative of leather traders’ community.

The meeting, chaired by Professor Yunus, was attended by several advisers, including Adilur Rahman Khan, Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, and Mahfuz Alam. The committee will be tasked with ensuring market discipline and protecting the interests of both sellers and buyers in the rawhide sector during the Eid season.
