
RAJSHAHI, May 7: Two government primary schools, Atarpara and Choumadia at Chakrajapur Union in Bagha Upazila of the district, are facing untimely erosion threat by the Padma River.
Atarpara Government Primary School is at Ward No. 3 of Chakrajapur Union.
The school structure was devoured by the river on October 9 in 2024.
Then a new structure was built with tin fence, one kilometre away from the erosion point. But within less than one year, the structure has again been in erosion threat.
There are 85 students in Atarpara Primary School. Students said, they could not attend classes properly because of breaking in 2024. It is the same this year, they added.
School Head Teacher Shafiqul Islam said, after devouring by the river, new structure was raised at their own cost; no government allocation was found. But the school has been under erosion again, and this matter has been informed to the upazila education officer, he added.
Choumadi Government Primary School at Ward No. 2 in the union has been facing the same condition. Its head teacher Sohel Rana said, in 1955, Siraj Mandal and Bhanu Bepari of Choumadia Char established this school. Because of erosion, the school was shifted four times, he added.
He further said, the school was run for 15 years in Choumadia Char, 12 years in Temadia Char, 25 years in Diarkadirpur and 11 years in Tiktimi Para.
Now the erosion point is 150-metre away from the school, and it needs to be shifted again, the head teacher maintained.
Ward No. 2 Member Abdur Rahman Dorji said, these schools are likely to go into the river anytime.
In three words of the union, there are 750 families with 3,050 people. Already living houses of many have been eroded, and in a compelling situation, they are leaving for other places.
Upazila Education Officer Mir Mamunur Rahman said, the matter of these two schools has been informed to the authorities concerned.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shammi Aktar said, after discussing with the education officer, necessary measures will be taken in this regard.
