Dhaka scorches under season’s highest temperature

The capital city Dhaka is experiencing its hottest day of the season, with temperatures soaring to 40.1°C, according to Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Shahana Sultana, a meteorologist at BMD, confirmed the record temperature for Dhaka on Saturday. While the highest temperature recorded nationwide was in Chuadanga, where mercury hit 42°C, making it the hottest place in the country this season.

On Friday (May 9), Chuadanga had also recorded the highest national temperature at 41.2°C, while Dhaka saw 39.2°C.

According to the BMD, a temperature of 38–39.9°C qualifies as a moderate heatwave, while 40–42°C falls under the category of a severe heatwave.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued a warning for possible thunderstorms in three regions by 1:00 AM, advising river ports in the affected areas to hoist cautionary signals.
