Convener of Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), Nahid Islam, stated that building a "new Bangladesh" is futile without first drafting a new constitution that reflects democratic reforms and ensures fundamental rights for all citizens.

Speaking at a discussion titled “Seven Proposals of the Citizens’ Alliance for Constitutional Reform”, held on Sunday at Mother Language Institute in the capital, Nahid emphasized that the existing constitution has repeatedly failed to uphold human rights.

“A new constitution is essential to rebuild trust between the state and its people,” he said. “Without addressing core reforms, reaching consensus on superficial issues will be meaningless.”

Commenting on the recent ban on political activities of Awami League, Nahid said the judicial process has already begun. “What is now required is a clearly articulated roadmap for prosecution. Only then will public confidence grow.”

He added that if consensus is achieved on constitutional reform, there should be no controversy or opposition regarding elections. “We hope that through dialogue and mutual understanding, we can move forward swiftly.”

The event was organized by Citizen Initiative for Democratic Reform of the State Structure and brought together a diverse group of political and civil society leaders.

Notable attendees included: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser, Dr. Asif Nazrul, Press Secretary to Chief Advisor (CA), Shafiqul Alam, Special Assistant to CA, Monir Haider, BNP Standing Committee Member, Salauddin Ahmed, Central Executive Council Member of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Mohammad Selim Uddin, President of Citizens’ Unity, Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Joint Convener of NCP, Sarwar Tushar, Chairman of AB Party, Mojibur Rahman Monju, Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon, Zonayed Saki, Chairman of NDM, Bobby Hajjaj, Advisor to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, Mahdi Amin, Executive Director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and Head of the Anti-Corruption Reform Commission, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, International Human Rights Activist, Irene Khan, Spokesperson of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Umama Fatema.
