President of the Bangladesh Muslim League Advocate Mohsin Rashid called for a ban on the Awami League party.
He made this demand during the party's 10th National Council at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in the capital on Sunday.
At the event, Advocate Mohsin Rashid was officially elected as the party's President, having previously served as Acting President. Kazi Abul Khair was also re-elected as Secretary General for the fourth time.
Mohsin Rashid stated that the Muslim League has always worked for the people and never held on to power without public consensus. He claimed that the party had only lost power through fair elections.
He said, "No Muslim League leader has ever been involved in corruption. Our leaders became poor while serving the people, but they never engaged in corruption."
Mohsin also emphasised that the party has always adhered to Islamic values and has never acted against the Quran or Hadith.
He criticised a proposal from the Women's Commission regarding inheritance laws, arguing that it contradicts the Quran.
Speaking about the Awami League, he stated that, since the party originated as a faction of the Muslim League, it should already be considered banned by the Muslim League.
He strongly urged the government to officially ban the Awami League as soon as possible.
Secretary General Kazi Abul Khair asserted that the Muslim League is one of the most popular parties in the country, adding that many of Bangladesh's most prominent leaders have been part of the Muslim League.
"We will restore the Muslim League to its former glory, Insha-Allah," he said.
Some leaders at the council argued that the Awami League could be banned under laws passed in 1974, 1978, and 2009.
They also condemned India's recent military action in Pakistan, calling for peace and dialogue instead of war.
Leaders from various political parties spoke at the event, including AFM Solaiman Chowdhury from Amar Bangladesh Party (AB), Lt Col (Retd) Didarul Alam, Labour Party Chairman Mustafizur Rahman Iran, and Gana Adhikar Parishad leader Md Rashed Khan.
Other parties, such as NCP, JAGPA, LDP, and the Ganotantrik Party, also participated and delivered welcome speeches.
Over 500 Muslim League members from across the country attended the council session.
The party's former president, Advocate Badruddoza Shuja, stepped down on 24 July 2024 due to illness. Since then, Mohsin Rashid had been serving as Acting President.
