The elder brother of slain Dhaka University (DU) leader Shahriar Alam Shammo, SM Shariful Alam, has demanded that no political interests be served under the guise of justice for his brother’s death, calling for a swift and impartial investigation and trial.
Speaking at a protest rally on Sunday organized by students of Institute of Education and Research (IER) at DU, Shariful said, “There must be no delay or farce in the name of justice for my brother's murder. The trial should not be exploited for political gain. At the same time, no innocent person should be wrongly implicated—only the real perpetrators must face the maximum punishment.”
Shariful also thanked the university's Vice Chancellor and Proctor for their efforts in pushing the case forward.
Earlier in the day, around 11:00 AM, students gathered in front of the IER building and marched to the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture. They later moved toward Shahbagh Police Station, demanding updates on the investigation.
Chanting slogans like “We want justice,” “Shame on interim,” “My brother is in grave, why are the killers free?” and “Justice for Shammo,” the protesters expressed their frustration and grief over what they perceive as slow progress in the case.
DU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan and Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, the Proctor, expressed solidarity with the protesters. The VC assured them of the administration’s active involvement and upcoming discussions with the Home Affairs Adviser to ensure progress.
"We have taken all necessary measures to arrest those responsible for Samyo’s murder and are actively pursuing justice," said the Vice Chancellor. “Please remain patient. We are scheduled to meet with the Home Adviser to discuss the progress and expedite the legal process.”
Following the rally, a delegation of teachers and students entered the Shahbagh Police Station to inquire about the status of the investigation.
The renewed protests come after the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum given on Friday by IER students and faculty demanding visible progress in the investigation. That same day, protesters had also besieged Shahbagh Police Station calling for immediate arrests and prosecution of the accused.
