A Dhaka court on Thursday denied bail and ordered the imprisonment of former Jagannath University professor SM Anowara Begum in connection with an attempted murder case filed with Sutrapur Police Station.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman issued the order after a hearing.

Anwara was produced in court following her arrest on Wednesday evening near the university campus.

During the hearing, the investigation officer sought her detention, while her lawyer, Obaidul Islam, appealed for bail. The prosecution opposed the bail request, and the court subsequently rejected it.

The case stems from a violent incident during a student protest against discrimination on July 19 last year. According to the complaint, members of the Jagannath University unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (BNP’s student wing) were attacked during a rally near Star Hotel, opposite the Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Court. Sujon Molla, then-general secretary of the unit, was shot in the eye and underwent prolonged treatment.

On February 25 this year, Sujon Molla filed the case, naming 193 individuals including 94 affiliated with the university’s administration and student wing of the ruling party. Anwara Begum is listed as the 43rd accused.
