Electricity tariffs will not be increased in the upcoming 2025–26 fiscal year, Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed announced on Monday during his national budget presentation.

“In the upcoming budget, electricity prices will remain unchanged,” said Dr. Ahmed. “We are working to reduce electricity production costs and reviewing the existing agreements related to power generation.”

His remarks came following a special meeting earlier in the day at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon, where members of the Advisory Council, under the leadership of the Chief Adviser, approved the proposed budget for FY2025–26. The proposed national budget stands at Tk 7,89,999 crore.

In addition to the electricity announcement, the proposed budget outlines adjustments to the minimum income tax. Starting from assessment years 2026–27 and 2027–28, the minimum tax will be set at Tk 5,000 regardless of geographic location. However, for new taxpayers, the minimum tax has been set at Tk 1,000.

Dr. Ahmed explained that the current minimum tax rates for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) range from Tk 3,000 to Tk 5,000 based on location. From FY2026–27 onward, if a taxpayer’s income exceeds the tax-free threshold, a flat minimum tax of Tk 5,000 will apply across all regions.
