SATKHIRA, June 3: A human chain and memorandum-giving programme was held in the district to demand the speedy implementation of the broad gauge railway line from Navaran to Munshiganj in the district, which has not been implemented for a long time despite getting approval.
People from all walks of life in the district organized the programme in front of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) office on Tuesday at 11 am. Leaders of various political, social and student organizations spoke during the hour-long human chain programme.
The speakers said, "The government has not taken any effective initiative to fulfill the just demands of the people of Satkhira, who have been deprived of railway for a long time. However, the broad gauge railway was approved about 12 years ago. The people are worried because the railway line has not been implemented."
The speakers also gave an ultimatum of 20 working days, saying, "If there is no visible progress in the implementation of the railway by June 23, a larger movement will be announced involving people from all walks of life."
The programme was chaired by Duet's Assistant Professor and Adviser to the Rail Movement Satkhira Md. Osman Ali and moderated by the organizer of the Rail Line Implementation Movement Satkhira Nahid Hasan.
It was also addressed, among others, by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-Satkhira District Branch Secretary Maulana Azizur Rahman, District BNP Member Secretary Abu Zahid Dablu, and former municipal mayor Tashkin Ahmed Chishti.
After the human chain programme, the leaders submitted a memorandum to the DC.
Upon receiving the memorandum, DC Mostaq Ahmed immediately spoke to the authorities concerned in a tele-conference and sought permission to send a proposal for the construction of a railway line from Navaran to Satkhira, highlighting the contribution of Bhomra Land Port to the country's economy.
