Bangladesh will take on Singapore in a crucial AFC Asian Cup 2026 qualifier Tuesday at the National Stadium, with a surprise in the starting lineup: Shamit Shome, a Canada-based midfielder, is set to make his international debut, while long-time captain Jamal Bhuiyan has been left out of the starting eleven for second match in a row.

The match kicks off at 7:00 PM local time, marking Bangladesh’s first home fixture in the current qualifying campaign. The Group C standings remain wide open, with all four teams tied on one point after two matches each.

Bangladesh head coach Javier Cabrera has made three changes to the squad that drew 0–0 with Bhutan on June 4. Defender Taj Uddin, midfielder Sohel Rana, and captain Jamal Bhuiyan have been dropped from the starting lineup. In their places, Shakil Ahad Topu, Mohammad Hridoy, and Shamit Shome have been included.

The decision to start Shome — who has never previously played for the senior national team — alongside English Premier League-experienced Hamza Choudhury in midfield represents a significant shift in strategy.

Bangladesh Starting XI vs Singapore:

Goalkeeper: Mitul Marma; Defenders: Topu Barman, Tariq Kazi, Sad Uddin, Shakil Ahad Topu; Midfielders: Hamza Choudhury, Mohammad Hridoy, Shamit Shome; Forwards: Kazem Shah, Fahamidu Islam, Rakib Hossain

Jamal, who has been the face of Bangladesh football for over a decade, has now missed the starting lineup for back-to-back qualifiers — a potential indication of a changing dynamic within the squad.

The match is pivotal for both teams. A win tonight would likely place the victor at the top of Group C, giving them a vital edge in progressing to the next stage of qualification for the 2026 AFC Asian Cup.

Bangladesh and Singapore have previously met twice at senior international level, with Singapore winning both encounters. However, recent form slightly favors Bangladesh, who have secured two wins, one draw, and two losses in their last five matches.

Speaking before the match, head coach Javier Cabrera said, “Playing at home gives us a strong advantage. The players are motivated, and we are ready to fight for the three points.”

The exclusion of Jamal Bhuiyan is seen by many analysts as a tactical decision, as Cabrera looks to integrate more technically proficient and athletic players into the squad. Both Hamza Choudhury and Shome bring mobility and passing range, suggesting a midfield focused on pressing and control.

"Jamal is still a leader in the dressing room," a team official told reporters. "But the coach is testing new combinations based on the opponents and tactical needs."

Shome, 21, has trained with Canadian youth academies and was recently scouted by BFF scouts as part of their ongoing effort to integrate Bangladeshi diaspora talent.

Tonight's match is not just about qualifying points — it's about identity. For Bangladesh, this is a test of a new generation of footballers, including diaspora talents like Shamit Shome, Fahamidu Islam, and Hamza Choudhury.

With a full house expected at the stadium and a nation watching closely, this could be a defining night in Bangladesh’s football journey. Whether the bold lineup choices will pay off remains to be seen, but what is certain is that expectations have rarely been higher.
