In a match brimming with missed chances and defensive frailties, Bangladesh fell to a frustrating 2-1 defeat against Singapore in their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier on Tuesday. Despite a spirited second-half fightback, the hosts were left ruing squandered opportunities as Singapore capitalised on their profligacy to claim all three points.
From the outset, Bangladesh showed intent but lacked the killer instinct in front of goal. In the 15th minute, a slick move saw defender Shakil Topu glide past his markers before teeing up striker Rakib Hossain, only for the forward to produce a tame effort easily gathered by Singapore's veteran goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud.
The home side was handed a golden opportunity in the 36th minute when Singapore defender Ryhan Stewart was booked for a reckless challenge, conceding a free kick. But midfielder Hamza Dewan Choudhury blazed his free kick over the bar, leaving the packed Dhaka crowd groaning in disbelief.
Just as Bangladesh seemed to be growing into the game, Singapore delivered a sucker punch on the stroke of halftime.
Midfielder Song Uiyoung latched onto Harhys Stewart's incisive pass and slotted home, silencing the 18,000-strong home support.
The second half began with renewed hope for Bangladesh, but their wastefulness in front of goal continued. Substitute Sahariar Emon failed to connect with Rakib Hossain's inviting cross just minutes after coming on, summing up a night of frustration for the hosts.
Singapore then twisted the knife in the 58th minute in spectacular fashion. Midfielder Hami Syahin unleashed a wicked 40-yard curler that forced goalkeeper Mitul Marma into a desperate save, only for striker Ikhsan Fandi Ahmad to pounce on the rebound and tap in.
Bangladesh clawed one back in the 67th minute when Rakib Hossain finally found the net, slotting home Hamza's precise pass to ignite hopes of a comeback. Yet, familiar failings resurfaced as another penalty and a flurry of corners came to nothing, with disjointed play and wayward finishing proving their undoing.
The defeat leaves Bangladesh still searching for their first win in Group C, while Singapore build momentum after their earlier stalemate against Hong Kong. For the home fans, it was a bitter pill to swallow, a match that promised much but ultimately slipped through their fingers.
With the qualifiers still in their infancy, Bangladesh must regroup quickly. But on this evidence, they'll need more than just passion, they'll need precision. Singapore, meanwhile, march on with a vital away win, proving once again that in football, efficiency trumps endeavour.
