Students of Carmichael College in Rangpur staged a demonstration on Sunday to press home a 21-point demand, citing long-standing issues related to academic facilities, infrastructure and campus security.

The protest began in front of the college's administrative building in the morning and later moved to Lalbagh, where the students blocked the rail crossing and adjacent roadways, causing severe traffic congestion in the area.

Students said they have repeatedly informed the college administration about inadequate classroom facilities, lack of new departments, a shortage of transportation, poor conditions in the girls’ rest area, safety concerns and insufficient ICT support.

However, no effective measures have been taken to resolve these issues.

Announcing the protest, the students said all academic activities, including examinations, would be suspended from Monday if their demands are not met.

Al Mahamud Asad, a student at the college, said, “This is not a political movement; this is a rightful demand for a better educational environment. We want a modern and quality education system on our campus. The protest will continue until our 21-point demand is fulfilled.”

Another student, Shimla Akter, added, “Although the protest is peaceful for now, we will announce tougher programs if our demands remain unmet. These are our legitimate rights, and we won’t stop until they’re realized.”

College administration sources said that discussions are ongoing to review the demands and take appropriate action.
