Expatriates Send $1.99b In First 21 Days Of June

Record $29.5bn remittance boosts country's reserves in FY2024-25

Bangladeshi expatriates sent around $1.99 billion (Tk 2,428 crore) in the first 21 days of June this year. Bangladesh Bank data revealed on Sunday shows the country maintains its strong momentum as overseas workers continue sending money home.

Bangladesh has received a record-high inward remittance of $29.5 billion so far in the current fiscal year (2024-25), marking the highest amount ever recorded in a single fiscal year. From July 1, 2024, to June 21, 2025, expatriates sent $29.5 billion remittance.

Earlier in FY2023-24, inward remittance grew by 26.7 percent to reach $23.28 billion.

Expatriates sent $27.5 billion remittance in 11 months (July-May) of the current FY2024- 25. Except for July 2024, remittance crossed $2 billion so far. The scenery of 11 months remittance is as follows: May $2.97 billion, April: $2.75 billion, March: $3.29 billion, February: $2.53 billion, January: $2.19 billion, December: $2.64 billion, November $2.2 billion, October: $2.39 billion, September: $2.4 billion, August: $2.22 billion, July: $ 1.91 billion.

In first 21 days of June, Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited dominated the scene by collecting $337.43 million (Tk 412 crore) alone. The private commercial bank captured the largest share of remittances, demonstrating its extensive network among Bangladeshi expatriate communities worldwide.

Bangladesh Krishi Bank emerged as the second-highest remittance collector with $250.51 million (Tk 306 crore), showcasing the specialized bank's growing presence in the remittance sector. State-owned commercial banks collectively handled $425.44 million (Tk 519 crore), representing more than one-fifth of total remittances received.

Private commercial banks processed the majority of remittances at $1.31 billion (Tk 1,598 crore), underlining their dominance in serving migrant workers' financial needs. The sector's extensive branch networks and digital services continue attracting remittance senders seeking convenient transfer options.

BRAC Bank secured the third position among individual banks by receiving $118.61 million (Tk 145 crore) in remittances. The bank's strategic focus on remittance services and competitive exchange rates helped it maintain a strong market position throughout the reporting period.

Agrani Bank led state-owned commercial banks with $172.39 million (Tk 210 crore) in remittances, followed by Rupali Bank at $108.23 million (Tk 132 crore) and Janata Bank at $103.72 million (Tk 127 crore). These institutions continue serving as trusted channels for remittance flows despite increasing competition from private banks.

Trust Bank recorded significant remittance inflows of $101.35 million (Tk 124 crore), reflecting its growing appeal among expatriate Bangladeshis. The bank's targeted remittance products and service quality helped it capture substantial market share during the three-week period.

Foreign commercial banks contributed modestly with $3.58 million (Tk 4.37 crore) in total remittances, led by Standard Chartered Bank's $2.51 million (Tk 3.06 crore). International banks maintain specialized roles in serving high-value remittance clients despite their smaller overall market presence.

Remittance performance in current fiscal year shows Bangladesh received $27.51 billion (Tk 33,562 crore) from July 2024 to May 2025, surpassing the previous year's full-year total of $23.91 billion (Tk 29,171 crore). This upward trajectory indicates sustained confidence among overseas workers in Bangladesh's banking system.

Weekly remittance patterns revealed fluctuations with the highest inflow of $883.47 million (Tk 1,078 crore) recorded during June 1-7, followed by $804.97 million (Tk 982 crore) in June 15-21, and $300.60 million (Tk 367 crore) in June 8-14. These variations reflect typical remittance cycles linked to overseas workers' salary schedules and religious occasions.
