AI hardware project by Sam Altman, Jony Ive face legal roadblock over trademark dispute

A high-profile collaboration between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and legendary Apple designer Jony Ive has hit a legal snag, as a federal judge issued a temporary injunction halting the marketing of their new AI hardware venture.

The dispute centers on the name of the project, which emerged after OpenAI’s recent $6.5 billion acquisition of io Products, a product and engineering firm co-founded by Ive. But a California-based startup called IYO filed a trademark infringement lawsuit, alleging that the new venture’s name is deceptively similar to its own and could confuse consumers in the competitive AI hardware space.

According to the complaint, IYO claims it previously pitched its product concept to both Altman’s personal investment firm and Ive’s design company in 2022.

On Friday, US District Judge Trina Thompson ruled that IYO had presented a strong enough case for infringement to proceed with litigation. The court has scheduled a hearing for October and, in the meantime, barred the Altman-Ive venture from using the “IYO” name — or anything “confusingly similar,” such as “IO” — in the promotion or sale of related products.

Following the ruling, OpenAI removed all references to the project from its website, including the original May 21 announcement. A placeholder message now reads: “Temporarily down due to a court order. We don’t agree with the complaint and are reviewing our options.”

In a sharply worded statement, IYO CEO Jason Rugolo welcomed the court’s decision. “IYO will not roll over and let Sam and Jony trample on our rights, no matter how rich and famous they are,” he said Monday.

The legal challenge could delay one of the most closely watched ventures in AI hardware development, which had promised to combine Altman's AI leadership and Ive’s iconic design sensibilities in a consumer-focused product.
