Salahuddin demands transparency on CA–CEC meeting

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has called for the public disclosure of the topics discussed during one-on-one meeting between Chief Advisor (CA) Prof. Muhammad Yunus and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin, held on Thursday.

Speaking to journalists at his residence in Gulshan on Friday afternoon, Salahuddin expressed concerns over speculation surrounding the private meeting. 

He said BNP believes the two may have discussed preparations for a possible national election in February, and emphasized that the Election Commission’s priority must be the national election, not local elections.

“Though Jamaat may prefer local elections first, the majority of political parties demand a national election before anything else. The years of struggle have been for a free and fair national vote — not for local polls,” Salahuddin said.

He also stressed that any electoral roadmap should be shared transparently with the public.

The BNP leader said the party expects the caretaker government to maintain strict neutrality in the electoral process and warned against decisions being taken behind closed doors that may sideline the people’s will.

He added that BNP believes the current political and administrative situation does not support holding local elections by September, and any such move without consensus would deepen mistrust.
