NBR issues strict directive on staff presence, public services

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has issued a strong directive requiring all its officials and employees to remain present at their respective offices during working hours to ensure uninterrupted public service.

The warning comes amid ongoing protests that have reportedly disrupted operations at key revenue offices.

In a press release signed by NBR Public Relations Officer Md Al-Amin Sheikh on Friday, the agency emphasized that no official or staff member may leave the office during work hours without prior permission from their departmental head. They must also register their departure in the designated office logbook, in accordance with government service rules.

The NBR expressed serious concern over the disruption in public service delivery due to ongoing protests under the banner of the "NBR Reform Unity Council." It noted that essential services tied to national revenue collection and economic operations are being hampered, particularly at field-level offices.

“Unauthorized absence from duty, leaving the office without permission, or arriving late is a clear violation of official discipline and is a punishable offense under applicable civil service regulations,” the statement said.

The directive stressed the importance of maintaining order and discipline within the NBR, particularly during the last three working days of the fiscal year—a critical period for trade, import-export activities, and revenue collection.

NBR has instructed all customs houses, tax commissionerates, and customs, excise and VAT offices under its jurisdiction to ensure the presence of staff and deliver services as expected by the public.
