Online submission of income tax returns is gaining strong traction, with over 17.12 lakh taxpayers filing their returns digitally in the fiscal year that ended on June 30.

Meanwhile, more than 21.65 lakh individuals completed their e-return registration during the same period, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

In a press release issued Monday, the NBR highlighted this surge as a major success of its digital transformation efforts aimed at bringing tax services directly to taxpayers’ doorsteps. The revenue authority reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing automation and digital solutions to make tax compliance simpler and more accessible.

Describing the growing use of its online platform as a “revolutionary step” in tax administration, the NBR noted that widespread adoption of e-filing is encouraging spontaneous return submission across the country. The system has recently been streamlined to be even more user-friendly, based on taxpayer feedback and evolving needs.

To ensure uninterrupted service, the NBR has kept its online return submission platform operational year-round, including the facility for instant issuance of income tax certificates. This service will continue to be available, it said.

Additionally, under the new Income Tax Act 2023, taxpayers can correct errors or omissions in their original returns by submitting a revised return online within 180 days. This provision, outlined in Sections 180(1) and 180(2) of the law, allows taxpayers to complete the entire process from home.

The NBR expressed gratitude to all who submitted their returns online and encouraged continued use of the digital platform not only for filing returns but also for obtaining tax certificates throughout the year.
