Bangladesh has recorded one new death from Covid-19 and 27 fresh infections in the past 24 hours, health authorities said on Wednesday. This brings the total number of reported Covid-19 cases in the country so far this year to 609.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 518 samples were tested across the country between Tuesday 8 a.m. and Wednesday 8 a.m., yielding a positivity rate of 5.21 percent. The overall positivity rate since the pandemic began stands at 13.04 percent.

Bangladesh reported its first three Covid-19 cases on March 8, 2020, and the first death on March 18 that same year. The deadliest days of the pandemic came on August 5 and 10, 2021, when 264 people died on each day. Since 2022, both infections and deaths have sharply declined, with periods when the daily toll dropped to zero.

Health officials continue to urge the public to remain cautious, especially given the periodic resurgence of cases.
