The Election Commission has disposed of more than nine lakh applications for corrections to National Identity Cards (NID) in the last six months under a special crash programme.

"Under the crash programme, we have resolved 907,662 NID correction applications in the past six months," said EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed at a press briefing on Wednesday,
"The commission has taken special emphasis on the crash programme, we have achieved significant progress. Most of the remaining cases involve documentation or verification issues, which are causing slight delays, but we are working flat out to clear the backlog as quickly as possible," he said.

To ease the burden on citizens, field offices are now empowered to accept and act on complaints immediately, the secretary added. At the same time, the EC is overhauling its data management systems to prevent information leaks. "Going forward, a one time password (OTP) sent to the holder's own mobile number will be mandatory for all NID services," he noted.
