The interim government's Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Choudhury has said that ensuring an appropriate environment for elections is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement agencies.
The Election Commission, local administration, officials on duty, and participating political parties all have crucial roles to play, he emphasized.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday in Uttara, Dhaka, after visiting the Industrial Police Headquarters and Uttara East Police Station, the adviser addressed preparations for the upcoming national election. He stated that the government is fully prepared, working to organize fair elections and taking all necessary measures to keep law and order under control.
Jahangir Alam Choudhury reaffirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating an inclusive, fair, and neutral election with participation from all political parties. Addressing recent incidents of mob violence, he warned that no one involved would be spared. “We are taking action against everyone involved. No matter how powerful a criminal may be, they will be identified and brought under the law,” he said.
He noted that several areas have recently witnessed mob violence and that authorities are maintaining a strict stance. Referring to a case in Rangpur, he said seven people have already been arrested, with efforts underway to apprehend all others involved. “Anyone found to be linked with mob violence in the future will also face legal action,” he added.
Highlighting the impact of modern media and technology, he pointed out that such crimes now come to light much more quickly, enabling swifter responses.
Regarding industrial security, the adviser acknowledged that the Industrial Police unit is facing manpower shortages at a time when the country’s number of industries and factories is growing daily. He noted that the government is actively working to address this need by increasing the force’s manpower and capabilities.
The adviser was accompanied by Industrial Police chief and Additional IGP Gazi Jasim Uddin, along with other senior police officials.
