Govt revokes flat allocations for former secretaries, judges

The government has cancelled the allocation of 12 under-construction flats previously allotted to former secretaries, retired judges and senior government officials in Dhaka’s upscale Dhanmondi area.

In a press release issued Tuesday, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works said the decision was based on the findings of a committee formed by the National Housing Authority (NHA) and approved at the authority’s 274th board meeting.

The flats are part of a project titled “Construction of residential flats in various abandoned houses in Dhanmondi and Mohammadpur, Dhaka (Housing Dhanmondi) (Phase 1)”, currently being implemented by the NHA. The building is located at House No. 711 (New-63), Road No. 13 (New-6/A) in Dhanmondi residential area.

Those affected by the cancellation include retired judge and former ACC commissioner Md Zahurul Haque, former senior secretaries Md Yunusur Rahman, Dr Md Mozammel Haque Khan, Dr M Aslam Alam, Md Anisur Rahman and S M Golam Faruk; former secretaries M A Quader Sarkar, Aktari Momtaz and Md Sirajul Haque Khan; former senior district and sessions judge Md Manjurul Bashid; former registrar general and judge Syed Aminul Islam; and former DG of the Department of Secondary and Higher Education Professor Nehal Ahmed.

Flat sizes ranged from approximately 2,050 to over 4,300 square feet.

The ministry statement said the cancellations were made “in line with the recommendations of the committee report and to uphold transparency and accountability in the allocation process.”

The decision reflects the interim government’s stated policy of reviewing property allocations and other benefits extended to senior officials, aiming to ensure fairness and proper use of public assets.
