The results of this year's Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations have unveiled a concerning decline in both pass rates and academic performance, marking the lowest national pass rate in the last 15 years.

The results were jointly published by the country's 11 education boards on Thursday around 2:00pm.

The average pass rate across the General, Madrasa and Technical education boards has plummeted to 68.45 per cent, which is a dramatic 14.59 percentage point decrease from the 83.04 per cent recorded in 2024.

A total of 139,032 students secured GPA-5 across the 11 education boards representing 10.66 per cent of the total number of students who passed. In comparison, 182,129 students achieved the highest grade last year. The data reveals a year-on-year fall of 43,097 GPA-5 achievers.

*    Average pass rate 68.45pc
*    1,904,086 students appear
*    139,032 students get GPA-5
*    6,660 candidates fail
*    Highest Rajshahi Board 77.63pc
*    Lowest Barisal Board 56.38pc

A detailed analysis of the board-wise results shows Rajshahi Board leading the country with a 77.63 per cent pass rate, followed by Jashore at 73.69 per cent and the Technical Board at 73.63 per cent. Chattogram Board also reported relatively strong performance with a 72.07 per cent pass rate. In contrast, Barisal Education Board posted the lowest success rate in the country, with only 56.38 per cent of students passing, which indicated 44 out of every 100 students failed.

Dhaka Board recorded a pass rate of 67.51 per cent, while Cumilla stood at 63.60, Sylhet at 68.57, Dinajpur at 67.03, Mymensingh at 58.22 and Madrasa Board at 68.09 per cent.

The gender-based data presents a consistent trend in female academic outperformance, with girls posting a 71.03 per cent pass rate compared to 65.88 per cent among boys. Out of the 1,303,426 students who passed the examinations, 676,445 were female and 626,981 were male.

A significant decline was also observed in institutional performance. Only 984 educational institutions across the country achieved a 100 per cent pass rate, compared to 2,968 in 2024 - a decrease of 1,984 institutions. At the same time, the number of institutions where not a single student passed jumped to 134 from just 51 last year.

The examinations, which commenced on April 10 and concluded on May 13, saw the participation of 1,904,086 students from 3,714 centres nationwide. Among them, 967,739 were female students and 961,231 were male. Alarmingly, 6,660 candidates failed to secure a passing grade in any subject.
