An expelled Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader has confessed in court to his involvement in the brutal killing of a scrap trader in Old Dhaka, where the victim was fatally struck in the head with bricks and stones.

On Saturday afternoon, Tarek Rahman Robin voluntarily gave a confessional statement before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Gias in connection with an arms case tied to the murder.

The court subsequently ordered his imprisonment. Robin previously served as senior joint convener of Chhatra Dal’s Ward-30 unit under Chawkbazar police station but was expelled by the student wing of the BNP following the incident.

Earlier on Thursday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana had granted a two-day police remand for Robin. After the remand, Robin was produced before court, where he confessed.

Police reports read that two separate cases — one for murder and another under the Arms Act — were filed at Kotwali Police Station over the incident.

Mahmudul Hasan Mohin was remanded for five days in the murder case, while Robin was interrogated under a two-day remand in the arms case.

The incident took place last Wednesday evening around 6 PM on Rajani Ghosh Lane, near Gate-3 of the hospital area in Old Dhaka.

The victim, Mohammad Sohag, 43, was from Purba Namabari village in Keraniganj. For years, he ran a scrap business on Rajani Ghosh Lane.

Following the killing, police arrested Mohin and Robin, leading to the filing of the murder and arms cases.
