SAFF U20 Women's Championship

Rain interrupts, venue shifts, but Bangladesh prevails over Bhutan

In a day marred by inclement weather and unprecedented decisions, the SAFF U-20 Women's Championship witnessed a rare footballing episode as the Bangladesh-Bhutan fixture was disrupted by torrential rain, prompting a mid-match venue change, a first of its kind in Bangladesh, and perhaps in the broader footballing world.

In the end, Bangladesh won it 4-1 against Bhutan. But the result was merely a figure as other facts of the matches are discussed more.

The match, held at the Bashundhara Kings Arena in Dhaka, began as scheduled, with Bangladesh taking a 1-0 lead in the first half courtesy of a determined effort by forward Shanti Mardi in the 7th minute. The goal came after a slippery battle inside a waterlogged box, with Shanti needing three attempts to beat Bhutanese goalkeeper Pema Yangzom. Earlier, in just the 2nd minute, a goal attempt by Trishna Rani had been thwarted by a puddle of mud, setting the tone for the kind of afternoon that lay ahead.

However, as the first half concluded, rainwater had begun to accumulate heavily on the pitch, rendering it unplayable for the remainder of regulation time. Match officials, including the referees and match commissioner, inspected the pitch multiple times over a two-hour delay but found unsuitable conditions for resumption.

In an extraordinary turn of events, the decision was taken, following consultations with both teams, to relocate the second half of the match to the adjacent training ground of the Kings Arena, a turf pitch deemed playable under the circumstances.

The decision, highly unconventional for an international fixture, saw the game restart not at the scheduled 4:00pm but rather at 6:45pm, marking a highly unusual bifurcation of venue within a single competitive match.

Despite the disruptions and challenges, the home side maintained composure. Bangladesh netted three additional goals in the resumed second half, securing a convincing 4-1 victory over Bhutan. Head coach Peter Butler utilised the occasion to rotate his squad, giving opportunities to several bench players. Only two starters Bannya Khatun and Shanti Mardi retained their places from the previous match against Nepal. Milly Akter made her debut in goal, replacing regular keeper Swarna Rani Mondal while Surma Jannat took over the captain's armband from Afida Khandakar. Regular starter Mosammat Sagorika missed the match due to a suspension following a red card.

Though the match concluded favourably for Bangladesh, questions loom over the preparedness of the venue for a tournament held during peak monsoon season. The Bashundhara Kings Arena has struggled to withstand persistent rainfall, with two matches per day leaving little time for pitch recovery. Players have had to contend with muddy and waterlogged conditions, hindering the quality of football and increasing the risk of injury.

With three consecutive wins, Bangladesh now top the standings with nine points. They remain unbeaten in the tournament and will next face Bhutan again on Thursday in the return leg of the round-robin league.

Yet, while the scoreboard reflects a clear triumph, the events of the day have raised serious concerns about infrastructure readiness and contingency planning for future international competitions on home soil.
