Chief Adviser (CA) Prof Muhammad Yunus has called on Bangladesh Army to ensure that promotions within its ranks are based solely on professional merit and integrity, rather than political affiliations.

Inaugurating the Army Headquarters Selection Board 2025 in Dhaka on Sunday, Prof Yunus urged senior military officials to prioritize leadership, discipline, honesty, and suitability for service when considering officers for higher posts.

The current round of the promotion board is reviewing candidates from the ranks of Colonel and Lieutenant Colonel, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR).

Highlighting the qualities required for advancement, Prof Yunus stated that only officers who have consistently demonstrated ethical conduct and strong leadership throughout their military careers should be promoted.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining the army’s professional, apolitical character.

Prof Yunus praised the Bangladesh Army for its contributions beyond national defense, noting its critical role in disaster response, internal security, and support to civilian administration. He expressed appreciation for the army’s continued dedication in assisting government operations, particularly during national crises.

“I deeply thank all members of the armed forces, including the Army Chief, for their unwavering commitment to the country,” he said.

The Chief Adviser began his address by paying homage to the martyred and wounded freedom fighters of the Liberation War, especially those from the armed forces. He also honored army personnel who were killed or injured while on duty in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and during the July 2024 mass uprising.

Upon arrival at Army Headquarters, Prof Yunus was received by Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, along with senior military and civilian officials. The Army Chief expressed his gratitude to the Chief Adviser for inaugurating the selection board despite his busy schedule.

The event concluded with a group photograph and a message from Prof Yunus in the visitors’ book, marking the formal launch of the 2025 selection board.
