Chattogram (Ctg) Port is set to raise its tariff rates by an average of 30 percent—the first such adjustment since 1986—as part of a broader effort to modernize operations and improve global competitiveness, according to Shipping Adviser M Sakhawat Hossain.
The announcement came on Friday following the adviser's inspection of port facilities.
Speaking to reporters, Sakhawat Hossain said the decision was taken in consultation with relevant ministries and stakeholders.
“This revision will help increase government revenue and enhance port capacity. However, we acknowledge that it may also increase operational costs for businesses involved in import and export,” he said.
To further streamline operations, the government may engage foreign operators in port management. However, the adviser stressed that all authority and oversight would remain under government control and cautioned against spreading misinformation on this issue.
Highlighting improvements under the new operational leadership, the adviser noted significant progress at the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT), now run by Chattogram Dry Dock Limited under Bangladesh Navy’s supervision. The Navy assumed control from Saif Powertec on July 7, after the company’s 16-year tenure.
Since the transition, container handling has increased by 13 percent, with an average of 3,200 containers processed daily, Sakhawat said. He credited improved infrastructure and international-standard facilities at NCT for the efficiency gains, while also acknowledging that the previous operator had performed well.
Rear Admiral Mir Ershad Ali, Commander of the Navy's Chattogram region, said an average of 3,250 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) were handled daily at NCT from July 7 to 24—a 12.10 percent increase compared to the previous month. During this period, 30 vessels completed container operations, and vessel turnaround time was reduced by 10 hours.
Currently, four vessels are being handled simultaneously at jetties 2, 3, 4, and 5 of NCT.
Port users and trade stakeholders praised the improvements under Chattogram Dry Dock’s management, saying the changes have accelerated port activity and bolstered the country’s import-export performance.
