Democracy should be practiced not only in politics but also in economics so that every citizen gets an equal chance to participate in economic and development activities, BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Thursday.

Speaking at a discussion organised by the Bangladesh Jano Odhikar Party at the National Press Club, he said, "Democracy should not remain confined to politics. We must also bring democracy into the economy, where every citizen, regardless of background, has a share in it."

Outlining BNP's vision of economic democracy, he called for joint efforts to build an inclusive economy that benefits all and ensures a better future for Bangladesh.

He explained that economic democracy means creating a fair system where everyone-from rural artisans to educated professionals-can contribute to and benefit from the country's economic progress.

"We cannot run the economy by favouring one group. The economy must belong to everyone. Blacksmiths, weavers, women, and retired people should all have the chance to join economic activities," Khosru said.

He added that BNP is planning initiatives to involve people of all genders and social groups in economic activities, making proper use of their skills and abilities.

"Even those who retire at 60 or 65 can still contribute. We are making plans to engage them."
According to him, greater participation in the economy will raise people's incomes and living standards, which will also make them more responsible citizens.

"When people earn more and live better, they understand their rights and duties. They will pay taxes and demand accountability on how their money is spent. They will have the right to say, 'this cannot be done with my tax money,' or 'my taxes must be used for the people'."

Calling for unity among all political parties, he stressed the need to build a prosperous, democratic, and inclusive Bangladesh.

"Each party has its own agenda, but for the country's progress we must find common ground. Free thinking and open discussions are needed to face challenges."

He added that people must work together to restore democracy and rebuild institutions so they serve the nation rather than political interests.

"We must return people's ownership of the country. We must remove barriers. My message to Bangladesh is this: we must build an inclusive country with people from all walks of life. But democracy does not mean all parties will think the same. Each party will have its own ideas, philosophy, and plans for the future," Khosru said.
