Sri Lanka's Wellalage receives news of father's death right after match

Sri Lankan cricketer Dunith Wellalage received the heartbreaking news of his father’s death moments after the end of Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup match against Afghanistan.

His father, Suranga Wellalage, died of a heart attack in Colombo, according to multiple Sri Lankan media outlets including Newswire and Lankanasara.

The 22-year-old all-rounder was part of the playing XI in the match held in Dubai. Although Sri Lanka won the game, it turned out to be a bittersweet day for Wellalage. In a tough final over, he was hit for five sixes by Mohammad Nabi.

Tragically, as the match ended, he was informed of his father’s passing.

Dunith Wellalage is regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s most promising young talents. His father Suranga, who passed away at the age of 54, was also a cricketer.
