Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage has decided to rejoin the national team for the ongoing Asia Cup, just days after losing his father.

The 22-year-old, who returned home to attend his father’s funeral, is expected to be available for selection in Sri Lanka’s Super Four match against Bangladesh, scheduled for Saturday evening in Dubai.

Wellalage’s return comes amidst personal grief, having lost his father, Suranga Wellalage, during Sri Lanka’s group-stage match against Afghanistan on Thursday.

Despite the emotional blow, he has opted to return to international duty, choosing to prioritize his responsibility to the team.

The young all-rounder had flown back home with team manager Mahinda Halangoda on Thursday night after learning of his father's passing shortly after Sri Lanka's victory over Afghanistan, which secured their place in the Super Four stage.

The match in Abu Dhabi was Wellalage’s fifth T20 international and his first in this Asia Cup. He took 1 wicket for 49 runs in the game but didn’t get a chance to bat.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed that Wellalage will rejoin the squad on Saturday morning and will be considered for selection against Bangladesh later that day.

His decision to return so quickly has earned admiration across the cricketing community.

Wellalage has played 31 ODIs for Sri Lanka to date. His best bowling performance in the format; 5 for 27, came against India in Colombo in August 2024.

He also made headlines during 2023 Asia Cup, taking 5 wickets for 40 runs against India and finishing as joint second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 10 wickets.

After the match against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka are scheduled to play Pakistan on September 23 and India on September 26 as part of Super Four stage.
