Shahidul Alam joins Gaza-bound Flotilla with Bangladeshi flag

Renowned Bangladeshi photographer and human rights activist Shahidul Alam has set sail for Gaza as part of "Global Sumud Flotilla," a civilian-led maritime mission carrying humanitarian aid to besieged Palestinian territory. 

In a powerful statement of solidarity, Alam was seen holding the red-and-green Bangladeshi flag, wearing a kurta bearing the image of Abu Saeed; a symbol of resistance in July uprising last year.

The flotilla, comprising over 40 civilian vessels and more than 500 participants from various countries; including lawmakers, lawyers, human rights defenders and climate activist Greta Thunberg, is currently en route from the Mediterranean. 

The fleet is now reported to be approximately 118 miles from Gaza coast.

Shahidul Alam, the only Bangladeshi on board, has been regularly sharing updates via his verified Facebook page. 

In one post titled “On lower deck of Conscience,” he shared a photo of himself at sea holding Bangladesh’s flag, evoking a strong visual message of resistance and international solidarity.

In another update on Wednesday evening, Alam mentioned that the fleet had entered waters that Israel has declared as “danger zones.” 

His post indicated rising tension, noting that although a Turkish ship had been spotted earlier during his drone watch, no immediate threat had materialized. 

“We still have about an hour left in this watch, when we usually monitor for possible attacks,” he wrote.

The journey comes amid serious threats from Israel, including warnings to sink the flotilla if it attempts to break the blockade around Gaza. 

This has prompted global concern, with international human rights organizations and political leaders urging Israel to ensure the flotilla’s safety. 

Italy and Greece issued a joint statement calling on Israel to respect the rights and security of those aboard, including consular protection.

Shahidul Alam had earlier announced his participation in the mission at a press conference on September 27 at DrikPath Bhaban in Dhaka. 

He joined the flotilla as part of “Media Flotilla” initiative by Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), aimed at breaking the silence of global media on Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza. 

He departed for Italy the following day and has since been at sea with the convoy.

Alam’s presence on Global Sumud Flotilla not only highlights Bangladesh’s voice in global humanitarian efforts but also underscores the role of civil society in confronting state violence and standing in solidarity with oppressed people around the world.
