The RSGT (Red Sea Gateway Terminal) Chittagong has delivered 14 hybrid Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes, with an investment of USD 25 million ahead of schedule.

This milestone marks a significant achievement to build Bangladesh's first international private container terminal, enhancing its operational capacity and setting new standards for port infrastructure in the region.

The final batch of cranes arrived at Patenga Container Terminal on October 16,  following an earlier September delivery, showcasing the company's ability to execute large-scale projects efficiently and in time.

This achievement highlight the position of RSGT Chittagong as a leader in Bangladesh's maritime logistics landscape, supporting the country's growing demand for container handling.

The cranes, manufactured by industry leaders GENMA-KALMAR, were custom-designed to meet the terminal's specific operational needs. Each crane is capable of lifting containers weighing up to 41 tons and features hybrid battery systems that significantly reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

These advanced cranes are equipped with safety measures, ergonomic operator cabins, and smart automation technologies, all of which improve the operational efficiency, safety, and reliability.

The deployment plan strategically distributes four cranes to South Container Yard, aimed at supporting expanding handling operations in that area. The remaining ten units are dedicated to Patenga Container Terminal, boosting its capacity for import and export activities.

This distribution is designed to optimize container flow, reduce vessel turnaround times, and enhance service quality for shipping lines and cargo owners. Erwin Haaze, CEO of RSGT Bangladesh, highlighted that this investment reflects the company's strategic vision to modernize Bangladesh's port infrastructure while adopting sustainable practices aligned with global environmental standards.

The hybrid technology integrated into these RTG cranes signifies a shift toward more environmentally responsible port operations. The battery-hybrid systems lower fuel dependency, leading to reduced operational costs and environmental impact. This aligns with broader sustainability goals and Bangladesh's commitments to international climate initiatives.

The early completion of this equipment acquisition and installation demonstrates RSGT Chittagong's operational maturity and project management excellence, reinforcing its reputation as Bangladesh's leading private container terminal, company officials said.

Looking ahead, the terminal has announced four state-of-the-art Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes are under construction and expected to arrive by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

These cranes will further expand capacity, improve quay-side efficiency, and enable the handling of larger vessels, supporting Bangladesh's increasing role in regional and global trade.

Overall, the USD 25 million investments in RTG and STS cranes exemplifies RSGT Chittagong port operation commitment to infrastructure development, sustainability, and operational excellence.

The terminal's ability to deliver these projects ahead of schedule underscores its leadership in the region and enhances Bangladesh's position as a key maritime hub.

This strategic growth not only fosters economic development but also establishes Chittagong Port as a competitive, environmentally responsible logistics center for South Asia, the company said.
