The long-awaited CAVA Cup Men's 2025 burst into life on Wednesday with a vibrant opening ceremony at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. The week-long six-nation volleyball tournament was inaugurated by Md Mahbub-ul-Alam, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, who hailed the event as a celebration of friendship, competition, and sporting revival.
In his inaugural address, the Chief Guest said, "Bangladesh is a friendly country. I am confident this tournament will be both enjoyable and fiercely competitive. With full participation, we shall stage a successful event."
The ceremony was graced by dignitaries, federation officials and guests, setting an electric tone for the tournament that brings together Bangladesh, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan.
A colourful cultural performance followed the formal speeches, adding rhythm and flair to the evening.
Presiding over the opening, Faruque Hassan, President of the Bangladesh Volleyball Federation (BVF), described the event as "a historic milestone for the federation and the nation". He invited fans to rally behind the home side, calling the CAVA Cup "a platform to restore Bangladesh's place in Asian volleyball."
For Bangladesh, the stakes are high. Once ranked among the world's top 70 nations, the team has slipped off the global list after missing international competitions since 2023. The CAVA Cup, therefore, offers a dual purpose, a shot at regional glory and a chance to reclaim its lost standing.
Bangladesh Head coach Ryan Masajedi has been shaping a rejuvenated squad since July, blending experienced campaigners with emerging talents.
He said earlier, "We'll take it match by match. Our aim is consistent improvement."
Captain Harshit Kumar Biswas, buoyed by a recent friendly win over Afghanistan, voiced quiet confidence: "Our main goal is to reach the final. That's how we measure real progress."
Thursday's Fixtures:
