Dhaka's hopes of reaching the CAVA Cup Men's Volleyball Final were dashed on a tense evening at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka on Monday as the spirited hosts succumbed 3-1 to a resolute Afghanistan side in what was virtually a semi-final showdown.

Both teams entered the court knowing the stakes, a place in the grand finale. Bangladesh, buoyed by three wins from their opening four games, needed victory to keep the dream alive.

The crowd roared with anticipation, drums beating, flags waving, as the home side took to the court under the floodlights, chasing history.

And for a while, it seemed the fairy tale might continue. Bangladesh drew first blood, edging the opening set 25-23 after a fierce exchange of rallies. The fans erupted, their cheers echoing across Mirpur, as the home side looked to seize momentum.

But the Afghan players, tall and composed, had other ideas. Regaining control, they fought back to take the second set 25-20, levelling matters and turning the tide of the contest.

The third set unfolded like a tug of war, both sides trading blows point for point, until Afghanistan snatched it 25-23, a set that proved pivotal.

With their backs against the wall, Bangladesh needed a win in the fourth set to stay alive. Yet fatigue and nerves began to tell, and Afghanistan's clinical finishing saw them close out the match 25-19.

As the final whistle blew, the Afghan camp burst into jubilation while Bangladesh's players stood crestfallen, their dream slipping away by the narrowest of margins.

In the final reckoning, Afghanistan booked their ticket to the title decider against Turkmenistan, while Bangladesh were left to contend for the bronze medal against Sri Lanka today (Tuesday).

The hosts, though disappointed, will look to bow out with pride and a podium finish when they return to the court for one last battle, a chance to end their campaign on a high and give their fans something to cheer about.
