Bangladesh's dream run at the CAVA Cup Men's Volleyball Tournament came to a bitter end on Tuesday, as the hosts fell to a straight-sets defeat against Sri Lanka in the bronze medal clash at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka.
The home side, who had played with heart and hustle throughout the tournament, seemed to run out of steam at the final hurdle. Sri Lanka, determined to avenge their earlier defeat in the group stage, turned on the style when it mattered most, sealing a commanding 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) to climb onto the podium.
Bangladesh began brightly, urged on by a vocal home crowd waving red and green flags, but the islanders weathered the early storm. In the opening set, Sri Lanka's solid blocking and quick attacking combinations gave them the upper hand, clinching it 25-20. The second set was a real tug of war, point for point, rally for rally, but when the crunch moments arrived, Bangladesh blinked first, losing narrowly 23-25.
With their backs to the wall, the hosts needed a spark to stay alive in the contest, but Sri Lanka's momentum was unstoppable. The visitors tightened their defence, spiked with precision, and finished the job 25-20 to wrap up a clean sweep.
For Bangladesh, it was the first time in the tournament they had lost in straight sets, a hard pill to swallow after their earlier 3-2 triumph over the same opponents in the round-robin stage. Still, the men in red and green can hold their heads high for a campaign that showcased grit, determination, and flashes of genuine promise.
Earlier in the day, Nepal edged past the Maldives 3-1 (29-27, 25-20, 35-37, 25-20) to secure fifth place after a thrilling, marathon encounter.
To the fans, the most disheartening fact was not the fourth place but the defeat of Bangladesh to Afghanistan in what was virtually a semi-final showdownon Monday. The host supporters were expecting to play the final at least. The boys in red and greens started the tournament in good note but the last two matches really failed the supporters. Hopefully the hosts will point out and resolve their problems for the future events.
